Jobs at Opal Electronics

You

Who takes things apart.

You clicked, flipped, and tapped anything you could get your hands on. Not just to test it, but to feel it—the snick of a lighter, the snap of a cassette deck, the perfect give of a switch.

When you held that first thing – your first iPod, Walkman, MacBook – you felt something.

You started to dream. How things could be better. Started to learn a craft. Design, CAD, the way electrons move over different substrates.

Now you are sensei. And you want to work with people every day who push you. You are looking for a place to do the best work of your life.

And we’re looking for you too.

Us

We started with a simple idea: the things you use most often should be the best things you own.

This led us to invent. Opal has been working on new things that may surprise even you.

So much has changed in technology, and so much of technology is stuck in the lab. Opal is building a series of new devices, that give consumers exciting new abilities.

  • Develop manufacturing dashboards, admin portals, and field-service tools that ensure reliability and quality at scale.
  • Design secure, seamless server-side OTA update systems and dashboards.
  • Create and manage user account flows that connect hardware, mobile, and cloud.
  • Ability to move fast in an environment where things are sometimes loosely defined.

Embedded Systems Engineer

Focus: Bridge hardware and firmware by designing electronic systems and the code that runs them, enabling seamless, intelligent, and reliable user experiences.

  • 2–6 years of experience developing both electronic hardware and embedded firmware for consumer devices.
  • Design, build, and validate schematics, PCBs, and circuits for wireless, audio, and sensor-driven systems.
  • Develop low-level firmware, drivers, and communication stacks to tightly integrate hardware and software.
  • Optimize for low-power, battery-constrained environments while ensuring high performance and reliability.
  • Integrate wireless connectivity (Bluetooth, BLE, Wi-Fi, GSM) into compact, latency-sensitive devices.
  • Create test fixtures, validation tools, and manufacturing diagnostics to scale hardware and firmware quality.
  • Fluent in C/C++ for embedded development, Python for tooling, and proficient with schematics + layout design in a E-CAD tool of choice.
  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews across hardware, firmware, and product design.

Firmware Engineer

Focus: Work at the intersection of ux and hardware to bring our devices to life with low-level code in power and latency-constrained environments.

  • 2-6 years of experience in firmware development
  • Partner closely with hardware and design teams to create seamless user experiences.
  • Integrate wireless connectivity (Bluetooth, BLE, Wi-Fi, GSM) for latency-constrained real-time multimedia applications.
  • Orchestrate power management for low-power and battery-constrained devices.
  • Develop manufacturing test frameworks and field debugging tools that ensure quality at scale.
  • Fluent in C/C++ for RTOS and bare-metal environments, Python for tooling, and the art of hardware debugging.
  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews.
  • Design over-the-air firmware update systems that are robust and simple to deploy.
  • Ship consumer products that are a joy to use.

Electrical Engineer

Focus: Tackle a wide range of electrical challenges across a diverse portfolio of consumer devices, from early prototyping to final product integration.

  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar/relevant role
  • Embrace a generalist mindset, jumping into analog, digital, power, and embedded systems with equal enthusiasm and adaptability.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, firmware, and design teams to bring holistic, well-integrated hardware experiences to life.
  • Prototype fast and iterate through concepts and tests to uncover the smartest path forward.
  • Own validation and testing, developing and executing test plans to ensure reliability, safety, and performance in real-world scenarios.
  • Curious and hands-on, continuously exploring new components, processes, and architectures to advance consumer hardware design

ML Engineer

Focus: Build and ship the machine learning pipelines that give our devices real-time perception and intelligence, from prototype to production at scale.

  • 3–6 years of experience working with AI models in production, ideally for real-time applications.
  • Fluent in Python for data pipelines and backend features involving third-party model providers’ APIs and SDKs.
  • Well-versed in a variety of data stores and their tradeoffs: relational DBs, No-SQL, cloud object stores, etc.
  • Experience with modern ML frameworks (PyTorch/TensorFlow), and experience optimizing models for edge/embedded inference is a plus, but not required.
  • Build data pipelines and evaluation frameworks to continuously improve AI feature quality from real-world usage.
  • Own the full lifecycle: data collection, dataset versioning, evaluation design, deployment and monitoring in the field, and feature improvement recommendations.
  • Comfortable with cloud infrastructure.
  • Ability to move fast in an environment where things are sometimes loosely defined, and a genuine curiosity about where AI meets physical products.

iOS Engineer

Focus: Craft the mobile experience that connects our devices to people’s daily lives, from first pairing to everyday use.
